New GiffGaff Member – Review
Has your phone contract expired and your looking for a good SIM only option? Or maybe you just want to save some money compared to your current plan? If you said yes to either then maybe the lesser known mobile provider GiffGaff is an option for you.
GiffGaff works in a slightly different way to most mobile providers, instead of paying a set monthly fee and getting a set number of minutes and texts you buy credit (Like Pay as you go) which you then spend on what GiffGaff calls ‘GoodyBags’. These goodybags are basically a package of minutes and texts, all goodybags come with unlimited internet. This allows your mobile to be a little more flexible with your use depending on your prediceted usage each month. Of course you dont have to use the goodbags, you could just treat your credit like a Pay As You Go service….. but that would just be old fashioned:-)
How It Works
GiffGaff is a community based service, meaning there is not a number in sight to phone, instead there are forum and community members activly helping anyone with and issue or question. Because of this the costs are much lower than other companies can offer at the time of writing. The company uses the O2 network so you should be able to get good signal wherever you are. Because it is all community driven you can claim some of your mobile costs back by being helpfull in the forums and introducing new members. Money earned from the community can be claimed back to paypal or back into phone credit. In fact some people get paid for using GiffGaff mobile. Neat huh? Credit purchased expires after 3 months so don’t go wasting it.
While the goodybag stuff sound like a bit conplicated at first it really isn’t and it doesn’t take long to setup, credit lasts 3 months before expiring.

My Moving Experience
For my iPhone I ordered a free MicroSim Precut by a community member ahead of time, activated it online (which involves topping up by £10) and got my free £5 credit for doing so. Once my old phone contract was about to end I got my PAC code from Orange Mobile and entered the relavent details into the GiffGaff website, scheduling my number to be ported across on a specific day. On the scheduled day my signal dissapeared around 1pm so I put my GiffGaff sim in the phone and within an hour my phone was up and running again as normal. Total downtime was less than hour which is quite impressive. Remember that to keep your number and move to any other mobile provider would be exactly the same process except you would probably need to do it over the phone rather than all through the website.
Wrap it Up
If you are not afraid of not having a phone number to call and complain when something goes wrong or you have a question then this could be a good solution, the people on the forums are very helpfull and usually reply with a usefull answer within an hour. The porting process to keep my existing number was quick and easy to do. Pricing is the best I could find, take a look for youself. While the goodybags can confuse you at first once it makes sense it actually seems like a good idea.
Update
Since moving to GiffGaff I posted onto the community based forum because I could only get a network connection when using WiFi, so web based apps and internet did not work if I wasn’t at work or home. I explained the issue and within 3 minutes I had at least 5 replies that explained how to sort the problem. It was actually my own fault for not reading the documentation
. Before moving to GiffGaff the community based support was the only part that I was concerned about, but I worry no more.
Take a look at GiffGaff today!
