FEAR 2 Demo Review

I finally managed to install the FEAR 2 demo onto my computer after forgetting I ever had it for about 2 weeks. In this short passage I will go through if I wish I had installed it earlier and if it convinced me to part with my cash for the real thing!

Initial Thoughts

The game seems to be a cross between Gears of War and Doom, meaning it is dark, scary, beautiful and addictive. Firstly when playing the game you are told to change the brightness settings until you can barely see a logo displayed, this immediately made me think ‘wow this game is going to be dark’ in two ways! After this you stumble to your feet and guide yourself into what looks like a pool of lava, don’t worry this is what you have to do. Next you wake up next to what appears to be a recently crashed helicopter with the propellers still slowly spinning. You automatically know that from here you will be entering darkness.

Below is a screenshot of that initial wake up next to the helicopterI mentioned erlier.

More information, anyone?

If I haven’t bored you away from this post already there are a few other bits I would like to mention. Firstly is that the game is easy to follow and I never managed to get lost, which is always a good thing in the pitch dark with a measly torch and a flickering light behind casting an eerie shadow in front of you. Speaking about shadows, they seem like an excellent part to the game, they can be used to follow enemies. At one point during the demo I nervously peered around the corner not knowing what to expect just to find that there was a light hanging and swinging from the roof, phew!

Another Point worth mentioning is as the name says ‘FEAR’ that this game will strike into you, maybe i’m a little bit of a wimp but in the pitch dark with some surround speakers things do begin to get a little edgy, this was only the demo and so I can only imagine what the real game will be like as it builds up to an ever so mighty climax.

Finishing up

So will I part with my cash? Well, yes. This is quite an achievement as I have not paid for a game for almost a year now, while I may have had all my settings turned all the way up and playing a HD resolution i’m happy to say my ATI HD4850 coped with the bloody mess it needed to create for me (even if the fan was going crazy). This may not be a game for everyone but it will appeal to those who liked Doom and Gears of War. Be prepared for a rocky road and a few jumps out of the chair and you will be well on your way. Fear 2 is due for release on the 13th Feb 2009 (uk) and I will be there after work collecting my copy.

Let me know what you think of the demo and indeed the game itself in the comments section.
