Computer HDD RAID Purchase

After having problems with my hard drives I have decided that it is time to look into a bit of security for my data. I have decided that I want to able to store allot more DVD’s onto my machine (before you ask, yes legally). But how can I have a quick OS and large amounts of data that is safe? This question has taken many hours of thinking and research but I think I have finally come to a conclusion.

I realised that if a problem arises then re-installing windows may not be such a bad thing, after all its good to do now and again and doesn’t take very long when you have all your drivers and software installs to hand.

So now I just want security on the data and performance for my OS, Raid 5, no I want to replace my Motherboard sometime soon without losing everything, extra raid PCI card, no too expensive.

OK so I want on board RAID 0 for that performance and quick booting OS. I also want RAID 1 for my data drives.

Next step, what is this going to cost me? Two 1TB HDD’s from Ebay (those new Western Digital green ones) £70 each. This will give me 1TB of usable space roughly 932GB when formatted. That should hold a few films! I would like to add that these drives are not particulary quick but this is not what I am after. I also chose these drives because I like to think that my computer is fairly green and not sucking any un-needed power.

I will also need at least 120GB of space for OS+programs, 2 80GB’s in RAID 0 should do the job.

For information about RAID setups I would recommend this wiki page

Thanks for reading and if you have any better ideas for my HDD setup please, let me know.
